What Ram Actually Did
The 5.7L 395-hp Hemi V8 that's been in the Ram 1500 since 2003 is out for the 2027 model year. Replaced by the 3.0L Hurricane twin-turbo inline-6. Ram says 420 hp and 469 lb-ft. On paper, more truck. In practice, not the same truck.
Why Ram Says It's Better
The Hurricane makes more peak torque at lower RPM than the Hemi. It gets ~4 MPG better on the highway. It meets 2027 emissions standards without any exhaust chemistry Ram has to explain to a room of engineers.
Why Contractors Aren't Buying It
The Hemi has 22 years of track record. Guys with 300k miles on '05 Hemis are still driving them. The Hurricane is new, and Ram's history with new engines (2.7L Eco, 3.0L Ecodiesel) is mixed at best. Nobody wants to be the beta test with a work truck.
What's Happening at Dealers Right Now
Every '26 Hemi 1500 on a lot within 200 miles of a working city has moved. Prices went UP $2-3k on used '22-'25 Hemi trucks the week Ram announced the change. This is what markets do when a proven product gets discontinued.
The Bottom Line
If you can find a '26 Hemi on a lot and you need a truck in the next 12 months, buy it. If you're happy with your current truck, keep it. Wait 3-4 years to see how the Hurricane holds up under real work loads before betting on it.
